The New Zealand wool industry was established and developed in the mid-19th century by immigrants from the United Kingdom. 

 

In comparison to Australia, the New Zealand wool industry is much smaller having an estimated 2.76 million sheep, much of them producing coarser type wools mainly used to produce non-apparel textiles for Interiors.

 

However, New Zealand does have some Merino sheep originally imported from neighbouring Australia, which produce fine apparel wool due to its clean air, pure natural water, fertile soils, and warm and moist seasons. This has enabled New Zealand to evolve its “clean and green” image.
